UN climate change talks 2011: Are interfaith communities stepping up to the plate?

A promising beginning: 2011

Two months before world leaders gathered to discuss the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in South Africa, a series of events in Ottawa (the capital of Canada) seemed to signal a new chapter in the faith communities’ engagement regarding climate change. On October 25, 2011, leaders from within five faith communities (Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Baha’i, and Buddhist) in Canada released a joint document entitled Canadian Interfaith Call for Leadership and Action on Climate Change. Arising from the Canadian Council of Churches and the nascent Interfaith Partnership, this position document was the first of its kind in Canada on faith and climate change to be developed and endorsed by a broad cross-section of faith leaders and communities (see Table 11.2).
